The Friends of Alkrington Woods were originally formed in 1997 and have achieved many improvements by securing funding for items such as new pathways and the educational area. We also arrange practical activities such as litter picking and invasive species control to get the local community involved in looking after the woods whilst getting some exercise and fresh air.
Some of the Friends help out the RBC Rangers as Green Volunteers and organise guided walks around the reserve focusing on nature and heritage.
The Friends work in conjunction with Middleton Township and Rochdale Borough Council and are fully insured to organise activities in the reserve. Ongoing projects include maintaining our town centre gateway and growing our community orchard. We are also slowly removing clusters of Rhododendron and replacing with native trees.
In 2022 and 2023, we were awarded a distinction by RHS in their ‘ Its your neighbourhood’ competition and we work closely with the Middleton in Bloom group.
We have received funding from both Middleton Township and the Parklife Community Fund in recent years. Tesco Bags of Cash also provided part funding for the Interpretation boards that were installed in 2023
